My reactions to some of Jason Nelson's work on www.secrettechnology.com
birds still warm from flying
I really enjoy this work. The interface is clean and stripped down with a good level of interaction based on a familiar puzzle, the Rubik's cube. I'll admit I'm not patient enough to solve the puzzle or to write out the lines of the poem in order to read it in its linear form. Placing the poem in the cube definitely places a distance between the author's intended meaning and the viewer's reading of the poem. This could lead to frustration, and poetry could be seen as nonsensical but I think these fragmented lines carry a weight that prompts the reader to assign their own meaning.
this is how you will die
This works takes the idea of a slot machine and re-imagines it as a random story-generating game. From a writer's perspective, I think this is a pretty cool way to experiment with narrative structure. The short pieces of story that generate in each section generally go together to create an interesting story, and it's fun to keep spinning the slot machine to create and read different combinations. The interface is pretty straightforward but the design and is dark and sombre, which fits really well with theme of death and creates an appropriate atmosphere, as does the background noise/track.
