Electronic literature and net art is an area that really interests me. I study creative writing, and am also interested in web design, so I think it would provide a good medium in which to combine the two. I've taken the Digital Writing and Publishing classes that Jason Nelson teaches which provide a bit of an introduction to e-lit. So I know that to create a piece of e-lit or net art takes a lot of planning and requires a pretty wide skill set. However it also provides an outlet for creativity that is varied and interesting. Creating a piece of e-lit or net art means a writer can utilize skills they wouldn't need to normally, e.g. learning how to use new software, or creating images, sound and video. I think that the combination of image, sound, writing and user interaction can create some really interesting new ways to tell a story. But it's fine line that needs to be walked in order to not lose the message in a jumble of disconnected elements. Another problem is securing a readership. You can be lucky and one of your works might go viral, but most artists would need to dedicate a lot of time to self-promotion, emailing their works to galleries and websites. These kinds of works are often fairly abstract and only attract a small audience. As a writer who enjoys working with digital technologies, I'd personally like to create an easy-to-follow, web-based fiction site that combines images and sound to tell tradition, linear stories in a new way.
